HOW TO GUIDES VOL.1 SUMMARY

The Publisher’s Introduction To “How To Guides” Volume 1 At Mr Black Publications we’ve recently completed the first in a new series of “How to Guides” resulting in this first volume… It’s the 41st Scale Model Handbook we’ve published to date. We’re very excited about this new series of books, which will cover the many techniques need to make better models! We’ll cover a lot of the popular subjects in this great hobby of scale modelling, and this first volume by Christos Katselos shows how to paint female miniature figures and busts, revealing all his secrets on how he paints female miniature figures. There are 11 chapters in this book where you’ll find all the necessary information for the preparation, assembly and painting of female figures, using the latest techniques and tools. The book offers nine themes; five in great detail with a lot of step-by-step pictures over eight pages, plus the introduction, preparation and assembly, aimed specifically at newcomers. All of the painting was done using acrylic paints from the well-known Spanish company, Vallejo Acrylics. Christos used about 65 different colours - 54 “Model Color”, seven “Panzer Aces”, one “Model Air”, three “Game Color” and one “Metal Color” to add a variety of colours for painting and to lessen any repetition. The first 52 pages are devoted to a lot of step-by-step projects with around 195 illustrations enabling the reader to easily understand and follow the sequences. The remainder of the book has another four articles with more photos of finished models with the necessary descriptive texts. A big thank you must go to Christos Katselos, a great artist, for giving us the opportunity to publish his work and share his secrets. Special thanks are also due, in no particular order, to Pietro Balloni, Luca Marchetti, Alex Vallejo, Darren Parker-Mead, Man Jin Kim, Alexey Lucanev, Fernando Vallejo, Taesung Harmms, Andrew Cairns, Young B. Figure Modelling 25 - FULL FIGURES ONLY You are holding the 25th issue of “Figure Modelling” in Mr Black Publications’ Scale Model Handbook series. This is actually the 38th book we’ve published so far, of which 25 of our titles have covered figure modelling; three are about modelling dioramas; four are the popular “Modelling the Second World War” specials; a further six are in our new “Theme Collection Special Edition Series”. This time our figure modelling book includes seven articles from seven well-known artists, who offer lots of tips and techniques about modelling miniature figures, busts and vignettes from ancient times to the Second World War, and onto the present day with 13-pages about the Multicam Camouflage on a 120mm figure. Five of the articles cover the subjects in detail, illustrated with step-by-step photos and explanatory texts. Sergey Popovichenko returns with an eight-page, step-by-step feature on a Greek Hoplite at the Battle of Marathon 490 BC. He shows in detail how to paint realistic flesh, metals, fabrics and the Hoplite’s shield using acrylics and oils. Next is a four-page article by Louis D’ Orio featuring the painting of a large-scale 200mm Templar standard-bearer figure using oil colours. Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth offers a Drummer of Grenadiers, 67th Line Regiment Vienna, 1809 explaining over six pages his painting method for a colourful 75mm Napoleonic period figure using acrylics. A six-page article by Toshihiro Sano follows, presenting a Russian Razvedchiki with his Waffen SS tank crew prisoner of war 1944-45. Toshihiro explains how Tamiya enamels were used to paint this World War Two vignette featuring camouflaged uniforms. The Soviet coveralls are the “Ameba” pattern, whereas the German tunic and trousers have the M44 “Dot Pattern” camouflage for tank crews. Eduardo Fernández Rodríguez presents “A Present for Hitler!” where in over five-pages he explains in a step-by-step article how to finish a World War Two vignette in less than 25 hours for an urgent Box Art cover! Learn how to paint African-American soldiers in 1:35 scale inspired by a real wartime photo. Our regular contributor Stelios Neofytidis offers a four-page article on producing a two-figure vignette, Italian Front 1943-44. He explains how to create and paint a vignette using commercial resin figures on a scenic base. He decided to give a different appearance to the well-known Alpine Miniatures’ figures set (35165 Kurt Meyer and Officer), which depicts a pair of Waffen SS officers using the Alpine Miniatures’ heads provided in the set. We welcome a new artist Huy Nguyen from Vietnam to Mr Black Publications editions with an amazing painting work of Multicam Camouflage on a 120mm figure using acrylic, oil and lacquer colours. This painting was done before the artist knew our intention to publish it, so we present only large, high-resolution pictures of the finished figure. However, we decided to add the painted chips of the mixes he used and a step-by-step painted pattern with the numbers of each colour he added during the painting process. This covers 13 pages! As always, thanks must go to all our contributors for their support and for sharing their secrets with us. Special thanks are due to Pietro Balloni, Luca Marchetti, Alex Vallejo, Darren Parker-Mead, Man Jin Kim, Alexey Lucanev, Fernando Vallejo, Taesung Harmms, Andrew Cairns, Young B. DIORAMA MODELLING 3 “The Diorama Art - Between History and Myth” by Vasilis Triantafyllou Welcome to “Diorama Modelling 3” in Mr Black Publications’ Scale Model Handbook Series, third in a series written by Master Modeller Vasilis Triantafyllou that includes five different creations. “The Diorama Art - Between History and Myth” by Vasilis Triantafyllou is perhaps the most impressive and complete version in our Diorama Modelling series and we are very pleased to have the opportunity to release this edition, featuring five award-winning creations made almost entirely from scratch. Within the 100 pages of this book, the five creations between “History & Myth” are presented in a glamorous and illustrative way that we know will command your attention. I met Vasilis for the first time a few years ago and was lucky enough to admire his work, “The Black Pearl Treasure” at the IPMS show in Greece. His creations are truly breath taking and perhaps no recordings or photographs of them would not fully create the emotions that would fill the viewer when discovering them “in the flesh” for the first time, but the reader will have the chance to admire and learn the secrets of a Master of The Diorama Art. “The Holy Lake” is the first feature in 54mm scale and has been developed intermittently. Here are presented in detail innovative manufacturing and painting techniques and unique construction materials have been used. The result is impressive as well as the study and work that was done before any construction began. Similar techniques have been followed in the other dioramas and emphasize the diversity of each one. “The Caribbean Village” at 54mm is the second theme of the book, presenting several new elements and additions to the creative techniques that were used earlier in the first theme. The third theme is “The Castle” in 75mm scale with some stunning elements that carry you back to 17th century Europe. “The Black Pearl Treasure” is the fourth, and perhaps one of the most impressive subjects we’ve ever seen in the 75mm scale. “The Retreat 1812” is purely a historical Shadow Box diary in which many 54mm figures have been used. The despair and destruction experienced by Napoleon’s soldiers is expressed on their faces and the artist manages to convey strong emotions to the viewer. In closing, I must first of all thank the artist and writer of this amazing work, Vasilis Triantafyllou, and his son Dimitris Triantafyllou who edited the photographs... Thanks are also due to Christos Katselos for his excellent English translation and our tireless English proof editor Ken Jones. The promotion and completion of this project would not have been possible without Zacharias Andriopoulos’ help. I hope you enjoy our latest addition to the Diorama Modelling Series! The “German Waffen SS with Panzerschreck” covers six pages with a lot of full-page photographs showing in exquisite detail some impressive painting of camouflage and military gear. The second of Ernestos articles is an SS German Gebirgsjäger 1/10 scale bust, again from the Young Miniatures Military Series. His five-page article shows how to paint realistically textured surfaces using acrylics to represent materials and fabrics. After a short rest, Sergey Popovichenko returns to Mr. Black Publications with an impressive step-by-step, six-page feature on a 75mm Pegaso Models Pawnee Warrior metal figure. He explains in detail his particular oil painting technique for flesh and the use of acrylics for fabrics. The article is 10 pages long with about 50 step-by-step photos showing, over the final two pages, really big photos of the box art painting of the Young Miniatures bust by Kirill Kanaev. Stelios Neofytidis strikes again with another two articles: the first is about a WWI British Soldier at Gallipoli, a Tommy's War 54mm resin figure and the second is an almost scratch-built 1/35 scale Greek Evzone of the 5/42 Regiment in 1919 using an ICM kit and a Hornet head! This has 38 photos over eight pages covering all the necessary details on Davids master painting style using enamels and oils! Christos Katselos strikes back with two impressive large-scale bust masterpieces... The first is a German 6th Army soldier at Stalingrad 1942, a Life Miniatures (of Sang-Eon Lee) 1/10 scale bust, which covers four pages. The second one has three pages and depicts a Young Miniatures 1/10 scale WWII Russian Cossack. Stelios Neofytidis, another of our regulars, presents two articles, one for each world war. FIGURE MODELLING 20 Welcome to the 20th edition of “Figure Modelling” in Mr Black Publications Scale Model Handbook series. This is the 24th book weve published so far, with 20 of our titles covering figure modelling; two about modelling dioramas and the remaining two books are our popular “World War Two” modelling specials. We decided to celebrate our 20th edition in the Figure Modelling series by featuring only WWI and WWII themes, which are our two most popular periods. We have 11 different articles herein – five on WWI and six on WWII. The articles have been written by four, well-known artists with lots of tips and techniques about modelling miniature figures, busts and vignettes. Our chosen subjects are covered in detail and illustrated with step-by-step photos and explanatory texts. Sergey Popovichenko presents a large-scale bust painted with oils and acrylics, depicting a British Infantry Soldier at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Eight pages with 58 step-by-step photos reveal exquisite details on painting, weathering and how to “add life” to this excellent resin bust sculpted by Young B. Song and produced by Young Miniatures. Mike “The Kiwi” Butler presents another eight-page masterpiece feature about creating a moment in history in miniature form, using the Fusilier figure set in 54mm. The sculpting was done by Steve “the Fusilier” Warrilow and the five-figure vignette depicts the ANZACS on Chunuk Bair during the Gallipoli Campaign in August 1915… Mike used original soil from the ground there! A three-page feature by Stelios Neofytidis depicts a 75mm German Stormtrooper sculpted by Andrew Cairns and produced in high-quality resin by AC Models. This is an excellent sculpture with a realistic pose that Stelios painting gave life to. The famous WWI flying Ace Eduard-Maria Joseph Ritter von Schleich, better known as the “Black Knight of Germany”, is the subject of a three-page article made by Mr Black Studio. The well-known American miniaturist Mike Good designed the figure and produced by the Model Cellar. There are some historical data included along with all the necessary mixing recipes for creating a natural looking leather flying coat for the figure. Stelios strikes again with an article about the WWI Canadian flying ace, Billy Bishop, another impressive figure sculpted by Mike Good and produced by the Model Cellar. This is an excellent reference for painting dark tone leathers. In a seven-page feature with lots of step-by-step photos (45) master artist Toshihiro Sano, one of our regular Japanese contributors, presents a guide to painting a 180mm Young Miniatures bust of a WWII German U-boat Commander using Tamiya enamels. Following is three-page article depicting a 1/35 scale, two-figure vignette from the first days of the German Invasion of Russia - Operation Barbarossa! This article, by Mr Black Studio, explains how to do minor conversions to commercial figure kits to produce a simple, but also unique small diorama. A winter scene based on the Ardennes campaign in 1944 uses a 1/35 scale Alpine Miniatures US Infantry Officer figure is the next subject by Toshihiro Sano. A short explanatory text, with Toshihiros necessary colour mixing recipes to make a similar vignette, should inspire you! Another winter scene of a two-figure vignette depicts a moment during the Third Battle of Kharkov. Stelios used one Alpine and a Sovereign 2000 figure changing the heads producing totally different personalities to the original kits! Read a lot of interesting tips and techniques here for creating the ideal WWII winter scene. “Somewhere in Stalingrad” is the title of yet another winter scene vignette made by Mr Black Studio. The Warriors three-figure kit is unfortunately now discontinued, but the same creation and painting techniques can be adapted for similar figures. Two figures were used after making some small alterations. We close with another WWII theme featuring Toshihiro Sanos impressive 120mm German Officer bust of the 116th Panzer Division Windhund. Originally an Alpine Miniatures kit sculpted by Mike Good, this particular bust was converted by Taesung Harmms. Awesome painting by Toshihiro using Tamiya Enamels shows why he earned two Gold Medals in October 2016 and July 2017 at the major US show held annually in Chicago. WORLD WAR 2 SPECIAL Weve reached the 18th book in Mr Black Publications Scale Model Handbook series, which is a result of collaboration from some old as well as some new contributors. This is the first book in the series we have entirely dedicated to creations inspired by those events that took place between the years 1939-1945 known to Western histories as “The Second World War”. Even though wartime themes are numerous herein, and feature an extended variety of models and figures, especially in 1:35 scale, weve managed to present many representative examples catering to the varying interests of our readers. We must thank all our contributors for their excellent work and their dedication to achieve this project. In particular, Kaz Tomori, Carl Startin “Carlos Figureart”, Man Jin Kim, Juanma Vergara, Stelios Neofytidis, Ioannis Tsikstiris and the dynamic Toshihiro Sano who appears for first time in one of our publications, offering no less than three articles!
